Magnificent in her regal attire, this princess represents the Cirebon court of northern Java. It flourished between the 15th and 16th, and marks the advent of Islam in the region. Syarif Hidayatullah, later known as Sunan Gunung Jati, founded the Islamic kingdom and is thus regarded as a wali or Islamic saint. Nenny Lukhita personifies the princess as a rod puppet or wayang golek, painting her pule wood face by hand and dressing her in hand-printed cotton batik. The arms and puppet rods are carved from pinewood while her jewelries are crafted with hand-beaten copper. Features a teak wood stand. Fascinated with the past, Lukhita wishes to create an antique, unearthed appearance for his puppets by applying a special finish to the face and accessories, making them seem dusty. |
